About Portsmouth Ohio
Portsmouth is a moderately sized town located in the southern tip of Ohio in Scioto County. Located on the northern bank of the Ohio River, it has a population of well over 20,000 people.
Originally settled by the Shawnee Indians, Europeans began to settle there just after the Revolutionary War. The city was designed by a man named Henry Massie in 1803 and officially designated as a city in 1815.
As the town grew, the town established an industrial base including shipping and meatpacking businesses. Portsmouth has a rich history particularly around work around the abolitionists around the Civil War.
